This issue features an original water color cover by Dean McKeever of Keever Art.

In this issue, Ruvani De Silva vulnerably shares the challenges of navigating perimenopause in the beer industry. Perimenopause is still gaining attention in society at large, and the beer scene is still working toward inclusion and quality for women, so the difficulties involved are significant.

Grace Lee-Weitzfollows the obsessives behind Hanabi Lager in California for a brew day, chronicling their devotion to brewing lagers with rare grains.

Cat Wiest of Yakima Chief Hops tells the story of her eclectic career, transitioning from fishing on the Pacific herring fleet to brewing and back to the sea, before eventually giving it up for dry land.

Here’s the complete list of stories in this issue:

  1. A [Perimenopausal] Woman In Beer by Ruvani De Silva—Ruvani here addresses the challenges of navigating perimenopause while working in the beer industry, a challenge a huge portion of the beer scene has, is, or will deal with at some point.

  2. For the Sake of the Grain: by Grace Lee-Weitz—Hanabi Lager obsessively lets malt speak for itself. In this article, the senior content editor for Hop Culture and Untappd tags along for a brew day starting at 3 a.m. and chronicles a fascinating passion project.

  3. Beer for Breakfast at Charlie's Garage by Lucy Corne—Every weekend, a cast of regulars show up in the parking lot of this Johannesburg parking lot and starting cooking breakfat for whoever shows up, building a unique community.

  4. A Legacy of Flowing Continuity by Christopher A. Smith—Christopher shares one of his favorite places on earth, an "oasis" he compares to the cafes that fostered James Baldwin in Paris.

  5. FisherPoets: Beer, Dry Land, and Joining (and Leaving) the Herring Fleet by Cat Wiest—Cat went from professional fisher to brewer back to fisher, and is now the copywriting manager for Yakama Chief Hops, and chronicles the journeys between sea and dry land.

  6. Catharina & Quenelle: 2 Vignettes by James Tai—James gives us two brief vignettes about experiences he's had while traveling the world as a beer judge, including his first taste of Catharina Sour in Brazil, and seeking out a degustation menu at a legendary restaurant in Lyon, France.

  7. Brasserie Vif Is Trying to Make Lager Happen in France by Anaïs Lecoq—While the majority of beer consumed in France, as pretty much everywhere else, is lager, France's craft scene is ale-dominated. Vif is trying to change that, and Anaïs explains some of the cultural and financial challenges they're facing in the process.

  8. Drinking For the Dead by Melinda Guerra—Melinda offers several toasts in the eventual honor of those who matter in her life.

  9. Beer Can Planters by David Nilsen—During the pandemic, David looked for hope where he could find it. One small project included taking beer cans with cool label art from breweries he wasn't even sure would survive and turning them into planters. He would watch new life spring from the soil of these vibrant containers and feel some small sense of hope. Here, Here he provides a photo-tutorial of how you can make your own planters from your favorite beer cans.

  10. Artist Showcase: Dean McKeever—The artist between Keever Art shares the original artwork behind several beer labels he's created over the years.

For each issue of Final Gravity, we select a non-profit working in or around the beer and hospitality industries to support financially. This issue’s beneficiary is Beer Is For Everyone, which works to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in the craft beer community.

Rather than a typical glossy beer mag, Final Gravity is an old school stapled zine, but with paid writing and art. It tells the stories that don’t often make it into the pages of beer magazines, the stories that together weave the fabric of the collective beer experience.

We believe passionately in the Final Gravity project, in the importance of independent print media, and in the DIY tradition of zine publishing. We hope you’ll enjoy this issue of Final Gravity.

This zine is 8.5” x 5.5”, 54 full-color pages, and staple-bound. Despite being a grassroots, DIY zine, it features paid writing and artwork.
