Final Gravity, A Beer Zine Issue 05

$11.00

Issue 05 of Final Gravity, a print beer magazine that shares immersive and personal stories from the world of beer, is now available.

Rather than a typical glossy beer mag, Final Gravity is an old school stapled zine, but with paid writing and art. It tells the stories that don’t often make it into the pages of beer magazines, the stories that together weave the fabric of the collective beer experience.

In this issue, Bono Sigudu writes about the South African beer style of Umqombothi, poignantly explaining its role to the Xhosa culture and its importance in her own family’s celebrations and milestones.

Nia Ryan of Herbiery Brewing in Madison, Wisconsin, writes about brewing beers without hops, and how exploring this forgotten method of brewing has mirrored their exploration of their trans identity.

Amanda Bruns and Obakeng Malope discuss the story of the South African water spirit Mamogaswa and the collaboration beer they brewed in her honor at Ebb & Flow Fermentations in Missouri.

Maria Kruglyak writes about discovering the glory of the Portuguese half-pint after moving to Portugal during the pandemic.

Here’s the complete list of stories in this issue:

  1. Soak It Until It Is Bitter by Bono Sigudu—What homebrewed Umqombothi means and has meant to South African cultural resistance and familial identity.

  2. Brewing Is Transformation by Nia Ryan—Brewing, Foraging, and Trans Identity.

  3. The Legend of Mamogaswa by Amanda Bruns & Obakeng Malope—A beer to honor a South African river goddess.

  4. Return of a Legend by David Nilsen—Monsters, b-movies, and the artwork for Great Lakes Brewing’s new DIPA series.

  5. The Glory of the Portuguese Half-Pint by Maria Kruglyak—How a hard-core cheapest-light-lager-pint bartender fell for the imperial.

  6. Phenols and Feelings by Melinda Guerra—Clove cigarettes, snowy cabins, sour candy, and the beers that keep old memories alive.

  7. Returning to the Hop Farm by Claire Desmarais—The growth of craft beer has allowed a new generation of hop farmers to return to the family farm.

  8. The Ghosts of New Orleans by Jody Ray—Finding non-alcoholic options in a city known for excess.

  9. Artist Showcase: Shannon Conway—Colorful and fanciful artwork by a Chicagoland digital artist.

For each issue of Final Gravity, we select a non-profit working in or around the beer and hospitality industries to support financially. This issue’s beneficiary is Beer Is Art, a South African organization that provides youth over the age of 21 with brewing and beer education to provide them new professional paths.

We believe passionately in the Final Gravity project, in the importance of independent print media, and in the DIY tradition of zine publishing. We hope you’ll enjoy this issue of Final Gravity.

This zine is 8.5” x 5.5”, 54 full-color pages, and staple-bound. Despite being a grassroots, DIY zine, it features paid writing and artwork and professional-quality editing.
